Flashback: A Heartwarming Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration at Thye Hua Kwan Nursing Home

Filed under:

On September 14, 2024, our team had the privilege of volunteering at Thye Hua Kwan Nursing Home @ Hougang as part of our ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts. It was a remarkable day as we brought joy to the elderly residents through activities that celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival

Spreading Joy and Light

Our day with the residents began with a lot of excitement. We prepared carefully selected gift packs that symbolized our respect and appreciation for the elderly, ensuring that each resident felt cherished. Handing out these gifts was a heartwarming experience as it gave us the opportunity to personally interact with the residents, witnessing their smiles and gratitude.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is known for its glowing lanterns and mooncakes, both of which we incorporated into our celebration. We set up a lantern activity where residents held beautiful paper lanterns that lit up the room, representing the light we aimed to bring into their lives. Seeing the joy on their faces as they held the lanterns reminded us how small gestures can leave a lasting impact.

Fostering Human Connection

Beyond the performances and activities, the most rewarding part of the day was the personal interactions we shared with the elderly. It was heartening to see how much a simple conversation or a shared laugh could brighten someone’s day. Many of us spent time talking to the residents, learning about their lives, and offering companionship.

This event was not just about providing entertainment or giving gifts—it was about making the residents feel valued and remembered. As we listened to their stories and witnessed their appreciation for our presence, we were reminded of the importance of human connection, especially for those who may feel isolated or forgotten.

Magical Moments and Music

Entertainment played a huge part in making the day even more special. A magic show brought wonder to the residents, who were captivated by the tricks and illusions. This performance was followed by a heartfelt rendition of the classic song, “The Moon Represents My Heart”. As the familiar tune filled the room, it evoked memories of the past, and several residents joined in, singing along with tears of joy and nostalgia.

The volunteers didn’t just stop at performing; many took the time to engage with the residents on a personal level, listening to their stories, sharing moments of laughter, and even dancing with them. The joy in the room was palpable as we all connected through these shared experiences.

A Celebration of Giving Back

As part of our company’s CSR initiative, this event wasn’t just about fulfilling a responsibility. It was a meaningful and emotional experience that allowed us to step outside of our daily work lives and give back to the community in a deeply personal way. For many of us, it was a day of reflection, as we realized that giving is not just about material offerings but also about time, empathy, and care.

Our team left the nursing home with full hearts, knowing that we had brightened the day of the residents, even if only for a short while. The bonds formed, the stories shared, and the joy experienced made this event truly unforgettable.

In looking back at this experience, we are reminded that social responsibility is more than just a corporate obligation—it’s an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of others, and in doing so, enrich our own lives. We look forward to future opportunities to give back to the community and spread even more joy and kindness.
